09/08/2005: "Recon of Devastation"
I just made the drive down to the coast of Mississippi and made it to the Emergency Operations Center in Pass Christian, one of many hard hit coastal areas. There isn't a word to describe the scene down there. We got down to US 90, which is closed to most people. There were just two of us in one humvee and it was a maze to make it down that coastal highway. Much of the 4-lane road is covered in debris, and some of the pavement has washed away.
We asked around and found the EOC and made contact with the military liason there and spoke with some Sheriff Deputies. They seemed to be in very good spirits.
There is so much destruction. Most of the roads have been cleared enough to drive through. People were filtering back, looking for belongings, and checking the conditions of their properties. Many, many homes were just swept off their foundations, and those that landed in roadways were simply pushed to the side to clear it.
Here is a map of Pass Christian from Google Maps showing the area we drove in.
