Busy Month Re-Scheduled To Now
My busy month was supposed to be in September. It was busy, but not for the original reasons.

Now those reasons have caught up with me and will make October another busy month.

We are moving next week to our bad-*** house recently purchased by Clint. Lots to accomplish in few days.

I am starting my new job sometime this month. Not sure exactly when, but hopefully it will be soon. Had to move the start date because of my recent deployment.

There are more things, but I can't think of them right now. I'm a little sleepy already. Still got some redeployment to do at the armory, so I will be in Indy most of the week.

I'll have pictures from that deployment soon that I hope to post on here.

A Quick Hello
Just a quick message. I'm home right now. Took two days to convoy back. Spent last night at a rest area along I-65 on the side of a hill. I'm a bit tired, and will be relaxing for a couple of days before I have to go back to the armory and do the re-deployment stuff.

Hurricane Hugo Anniversary
Hurricane Hugo slammed into the coast of South Carolina late last night back in 1989.

Here is a good story about a TV station and their experiences with Hugo.

Veggies!
Here is a pic of my vegetables that my sister sent me via camera phone. Would be nice if I could be there to see them (or eat them!)

Another Subtle Change
I made another subtle change. Just directory structure stuff you won't notice... except the location of my blog has changed slightly. You were redirected here so you are ok for now. It probably won't be a problem, but if you use a bookmark to navigate to my blog, you should update it. This should be the last change for a while.

If you link here from your website, you should never have a problem if you use http://blog.landofalexander.com because that will always take you to wherever I put my blog.

If you just bookmark my blog, you should bookmark again and it will change to http://www.landofalexander.com/blog

It was rough handling all of this remotely (remotely as in not at my own computer) but I did it.

No word on my homecoming yet.

Much Needed Optimism
Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice gave a fantastic interview on Fox News with Bill O'reilly.

Link to the partial transcript.

I highly recommend you watch the video of it, to get the full effect.

Condi talks with Bill about many issues, including Hurricane Katrina relief, relief for the poor, Iraq, and Iran.

She is a brilliant woman, and I have been a fan for a long time. I hope that we continue to see her in the political arena for many years.

Biloxi Recon
I think I forgot to metion my trip to Biloxi to view the area, and check on some of our people supporting the law enforcement in that area. People are starting to come back now that they are allowed into a larger area, and the traffic was a little rough. We had a good map and I was able to navigate around it all. Biloxi was pretty hard hit too, and most of the beachfront structures was completely destroyed, as well as US 90 that runs right along the beach. Emergency vehicles (and of course my humvee) could navigate 90 enough to get from point A to point B.

We talked to some MPs that we found at a traffic point. The Red Cross had just dropped off some hot meals for them, and they offered the extras to us. We found the Walmart in downtown Biloxi and stopped to see if they had caffeinated coffee (of course they were out.) A woman driving with her kid in the back stopped us to see if we had any MREs (Meal Ready to Eat) with us, so we gave her a few. She said her son was enjoying seeing all the Army trucks everywhere and talking to some of the soldiers. I would say he was around 4 years old.

Then we drove over to and visited the Task Force headquarters to see the operation there.

We stopped at a Walmart in Wiggins on the way back to find coffee. I was lucky to find what I did, and it was enough to get us through a couple more days. We went to the Wendys which was open next to it and they were letting Military eat for free.

A new link to check out for around here.

Federal Response for Katrina
"The Federal Response for Katrina was faster than Hugo and Andrew."

This caught my eye on Drudgereport.

"We do not yet have teleporter or replicator technology like you saw on 'Star Trek' in college between hookah hits and waiting to pick up your worthless communications degree while the grown-ups actually engaged in the recovery effort were studying engineering."

There is a website for our Mission down here if you would like to visit.

Recon of Devastation
I just made the drive down to the coast of Mississippi and made it to the Emergency Operations Center in Pass Christian, one of many hard hit coastal areas. There isn't a word to describe the scene down there. We got down to US 90, which is closed to most people. There were just two of us in one humvee and it was a maze to make it down that coastal highway. Much of the 4-lane road is covered in debris, and some of the pavement has washed away.

We asked around and found the EOC and made contact with the military liason there and spoke with some Sheriff Deputies. They seemed to be in very good spirits.

There is so much destruction. Most of the roads have been cleared enough to drive through. People were filtering back, looking for belongings, and checking the conditions of their properties. Many, many homes were just swept off their foundations, and those that landed in roadways were simply pushed to the side to clear it.

Here is a map of Pass Christian from Google Maps showing the area we drove in.

Here I Am
I am at Camp Shelby Mississippi supporting National Guard operations within this state.

I get to shower regularly now, and last night was my first good night of sleep since I left last Friday.

There are a lot of soldiers around here, and lots and lots of vehicles. There are helicopter flights ocurring at all hours of the day and night. The base has power, water, and cell phone coverage that is workable.

We have a lot of people that are being spread out all over the state to different operating centers, and command centers around the state.

Message from me
I have comms via this website. Here is a link or two.

Indy Star Article on Indiana Troops

WTHR News

"Indiana is already sending the largest Guard contingent of any state to assist in recovery efforts. By this weekend all 2,500 Hoosiers should be well on their way to restoring order, hope and dignity to the Gulf Coast."

Go Hoosiers!

It has been rough the last couple of days, but now things are looking better. I had a bed to sleep in last night (which I couldn't say the two nights before.) The drive down was long, but we made it in two days.

If you have my Army email addres, you may email me there. You can also leave comments here on my blog. Thanks to the people I have heard from already. I have my cell phone, but I only check it once or twice a day for messages.
